Karen Blanchard, AIA
Principal, SITIO architecture + urbanism
Karen is focused on delivering design excellence to multifaceted projects. Her vast experience ranges in scale and typology – she is fully engrossed as an architect and urban designer on civic and cultural, residential, educational and mixed-use projects. Karen’s commitment to design and the profession has resulted in numerous design awards as well as being presented the AIA Philadelphia Young Architect award. She has played a vital role on both the Levitt Pavilion and the Hoover Mason Trestle at SteelStacks, The View at Wanamaker, and Germantown Academy. Karen is the Co-Chair of the AIA Philadelphia Women In Architecture Committee, and sits on the AIA Philadelphia Board of Directors and their Executive Committee. In addition, she serves her community on the Board of Directors with the Fairmount Community Development Corporation.
Karen has a Bachelor of Architecture from Philadelphia University. She is active there as an adjunct faculty member and sits on the College of Architecture and the Built Environment Advancement Council.
Troy Hannigan, Assoc. AIA
Program Director | Community Ventures
Troy Hannigan, Assoc. AIA, is program director at Community Ventures, a non-profit affordable housing developer partnering with local communities to create sustainable and affordable opportunities, and has been working in various aspects of architecture and affordable housing development since 2009. Troy manages complex multi-family housing development projects from conception through occupancy including managing development, financing and construction budgets from four million to twenty-one million dollar projects.
Troy has been an active member of the AIA since 2009 and has served on the AIA Philadelphia Board of Directors since 2014. Troy was Associate Director and co-chaired the Associate Committee in 2014 and 2015, served as Secretary and interim Treasurer in 2015 and was elected Treasurer for 2016. In his first year as Treasurer, Troy assisted the Chapter staff and Board through a complicated financial year with the AIA National Convention and renovations at the Center / Architecture + Design, and helped streamline financial reporting to the Board. As AIA Philadelphia Chapter Treasurer, Troy will also serve as the Treasurer for the Center / Architecture + Design.
Troy graduated from Philadelphia University with a Bachelor of Architecture and completed a Master’s of Arts in Urban Studies with a concentration in Community Development from Eastern University. Troy is a recipient of the 2014 Philadelphia Association of CDC’s Rising Star Award, a co-recipient of the 2015 Philadelphia University Young Alumni Achievement Award and received the 2015 AIA Pennsylvania Associate Award.

Sherman Aronson, AIA, LEED AP
Senior Associate, BLT Architects
Sherman Aronson has 40 years of experience in architecture, preservation and sustainable design. He is a Senior Associate leading projects in the transportation, commercial and higher education sectors. He has managed renovations at regional rail stations, Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor, and local transit, including the improvements to 15th Street Station and City Hall Stations and the Dilworth Park entrances. Sherman leads the Green Design Committee within BLT Architects, managing the green design and LEED certification of projects with a combined area of more than 6 million square feet. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a B. Arch, M. Arch and M. Arch (Louis Kahn) 1974 and has been an Adjunct Professor of Architecture at Drexel University since 1987. Sherman’s work received awards from the Preservation Alliance, the GSA and the AIA. He has presented at the AIA National Convention 2000, Sustainable Campuses Conferences, USGBC Greening the Heartland Conference, BOMA International, EPA Region 3, Drexel University, and the AIA Philadelphia Design on the Delaware Conferences. His recent clients include SEPTA, Donegal Insurance Group, Virginia Tech University, PREIT, Penn State University, and PFCU.
“Our AIA Philadelphia is a terrific resource for the design community. As a member, I have been actively engaged with our Historic Preservation Committee, a regular participant with the Design Advocacy Group meetings, and the Building Enclosure Council education sessions held at the Center. I also loved providing sketches and prints for the Art by Architects exhibits.
I would like to serve on the AIA Board to work with our members to look for ways to make green design even more part of our normal practice, and to reinforce our respect for Philadelphia’s heritage of historic architecture, both of earlier generations and modern achievements. For me, achieving both preservation and LEED certification on renovations projects is great challenge and should be a goal for many buildings in the city and region.
Supporting continuing education for our members and general education at all levels for the public is part of our mission. I will work to amplify these opportunities, as well as help improve how we conduct our practice, develop our work technically, and address the ongoing change in our industry.
Most of all we should encourage good design in all its aspects, provide outlets for our talented young architects to present their ideas. We should continue making our Center for Architecture the home for all of our activities, gatherings, events, exhibits and the place to come together that it has become.”
Chris DePalma, AIA, LEED AP BD+C
Chris DePalma is an architect at HDR and currently practices alongside an integrated team of designers, engineers, contractors and users to design Penn Medicine's New Patient Tower. His past work includes a variety of international and domestic projects in the healthcare, science & technology, and commercial sectors. For several years, he has chaired HDR's Young Professionals Group which promotes career development through service and networking. HDR has recognized his dedication to leading, mentoring and recruiting his peers through the Pathfinder Award for Leadership.
Chris received his Bachelor of Architecture with Honors, graduating at the top of his class at Syracuse University and earning the highest undergraduate distinction as a University Scholar. A firm believer that creativity thrives by working across disciplines and perspectives, he studied in places such as Ghana, Turkey, England and Italy. These travels developed his design interest in access and mobility. Back home, this led him to found volunteer ventures in accessible design-build projects and vacant storefront repurposing as well as develop an award-winning thesis on information space in the digital age. While at Syracuse, he also led his AIAS chapter, co-chaired the "Reclaiming Architecture" regional symposium, and served on the School of Architecture's Advisory Board. His explorations led to studies in related fields such as public policy and real estate development, including an internship working to rebuild the World Trade Center. Chris values the importance of licensure, and became a registered architect within three years of graduation.
Here in Philadelphia, Chris serves on the Fishtown Zoning Committee and is currently revamping his neighborhood's design guidelines. As an active leader on the AIA Philadelphia Emerging Architects Committee, Chris has organized various construction tours, mentored local college students, volunteered at convention, and served on the planning committees for PEA's annual Fast Forward and Spooktacular events.

David Hincher, AIA
Project Architect, KieranTimberlake
David Hincher, AIA is a native of North Carolina with an undergraduate architecture degree from NC State University and a Masters of Architecture in Sustainable Design from University of Texas at Austin. David is a project architect with KieranTimberlake since 2006 and has 20 years of experience managing complex institutional projects in North Carolina, Texas, New York and Pennsylvania. His professional interests are in green building technologies, performance building energy modeling, and materials investigations. David teaches occasionally at Temple University on topics of building systems and environmentally responsive design research in addition to serving on studio juries.
David has lead several Community Design Collaborative projects at building and urban planning scales in both Germantown and West Philadelphia neighborhoods. He currently serves as president of Cedar Park Neighbors community organization in West Philly and has been active within the community, its schools and Girl Scout troop since moving to Cedar Park in 2008. David also chairs their development impact task force, which crafts broad policies for zoning issues and new construction within the community. He is also joining the Collaborative’s design services committee in early 2017 to be more engaged with design activism across Philadelphia.
Statement of purpose:
Our family loves this city and admire the amazing architectural and social contributions made by its many citizens. Through my years of active participation in our local community, I want to engage broadly, deeply and collaboratively across Philadelphia and the architectural community towards design with a social and environmental impact. I am honored for the opportunity to serve the local chapter and contribute to the impact of architecture within our city.
Darin Cavanagh Jellison, AIA

Darin Cavanaugh Jellison has 18 years experience in architecture and holds the position of Associate at Blackney Hayes Architects. He works closely and co-operatively with clients to create insightful conceptual and schematic designs and, as Project Manager, coordinates the project team’s goals and drives a project to successful completion. He has developed a complete understanding of the issues involved in the design and function of buildings and has undertaken various project types, including educational facilities, corporate offi ce facilities, residential units, hotels and institutional buildings.

Stephen M. Johnson, AIA, LEED AP

Stephen Johnson has been part of the Philadelphia Architecture community since beginning at the Temple University School of Architecture in 1997. During University, Stephen worked with Armstrong Kaulbach Architects followed by Peter Arfaa Architects upon graduation. Stephen completed his Intern Development Program training with Partridge Tackett Architects and received his PA Professional License in 2000. Stephen moved to Kling Lindquist in 2000, now Jacobs Engineering, where he has been employed for the last 16 years. Stephen received his NCARB certificate in 2002 and became a LEED accredited professional in 2006.
Stephen is currently responsible for managing project teams of Architects, Interior Designers, Civil, Structural, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineers for highly complex repair, renovation, and construction projects. Stephen is responsible for all phases of projects including marketing, proposals, programming, budgeting/scheduling, design, detailing, and construction administration. His sector experience includes Mission Critical, Railroad, Government, High Technology, Healthcare, Corporate, and Higher Education.
Stephen has been an AIA member since his first year at Temple. His volunteer activities include the Community Design Collaborative, University City Swim Club Operations Manager, and Students Run Philly Style Leader. In 2016, Stephen was the Volunteer Committee Chairman for the AIA National Convention hosted in Philadelphia this summer. Stephen asked to take a more active role in the local Philadelphia AIA Chapter immediately following his participation in Convention.
Stephen is pursuing membership approval for a two year, non-officer position. Stephen committee interests include the Associates Committee, Committee on the Environment, and AIA/GBCA Committee.
Stephan Kuttner Potts, AIA
Principal, Stanev Potts Architects
Stephan Potts is a Massachusetts native who received his Bachelors Degree in Design of the Environment from University of Pennsylvania and his Masters in Architecture from Harvard’s Graduate School of Design. High school summers spent on construction sites, often interning with various building trades, provided him a firm grasp of construction methodology and its implementation in the field. Steve has explored his interest in the intersections between architecture, academics, sculpture, industrial design and interactive media in a variety of ways, including a two-year sculptural apprenticeship in Rome Italy, and grant-based research in cross disciplinary user-responsive building elements. In the late 1990’s, Steve moved back to Philadelphia to work at Bohlin Cywinski Jackson. He cofounded Stanev Potts Architects in 2007.
During his time here, Stephan has participated in juries at Temple, Drexel, University of the Arts, Philadelphia University and PennDesign. Stephan is currently on the professional team collaborating with Philadelphia University professors under a 2015 NCARB Award which pairs active practitioners with emerging curricula to engage students in new levels of architectural professional development at the core studio level.
Over the last nine years as a firm principal, Stephan has understood the value of the AIA to a small architecture practice. AIA contract documents, practice guidelines, and marketing and educational opportunities have been invaluable to the ongoing development of Stanev Potts Architects. Observing the growth and development that has taken place in our city over that time, has also underscored the value of our profession to the welfare of individuals and cities. Stephan would like to join the Philadelphia AIA board in order to contribute more actively to the Organization’s efforts to support the profession on several levels: he would like to be a more outspoken advocate for the rights and value of architects as well as to take an even more active role in supporting the professional development of young architects.
Robert Shuman, AIA
Professor, Temple University
My perspective on architecture has developed over my career from the belief that construction is fundamental to design. This perspective has its roots in my early training as a carpenter, mechanic, and furniture maker. After more than 30 years of professional practice, much of which has required me to master the collateral activities of managing a competitive design based professional services practice, my first principles still remain connected to the hands-on ‘making’ of consequential things in time and space with craft and careful consideration of their sustenance of universal human experience. Now as a teacher in the Master of Architecture program at Temple University, I am endeavoring to pass that perspective on to my students.

Sarah Soh, AIA, LEED AP
Project Architect, Gensler
With 14 years of professional experience, Sarah Soh is a project architect at Gensler. Her project experience has included a range of client types, such as healthcare, mission critical, skyscrapers, mixed-use developments, retail and corporate interiors. These projects have received multiple awards, and have been published in notable magazines such as Interior Design, Contract, and Healthcare Design Magazine. Sarah obtained her license registration and LEED AP accreditation in 2007.
Sarah received a Bachelor’s degree, magna cum laude at University of Florida in 2001 and a Master’s degree at University of Pennsylvania in 2003. During her master’s program studies, she was awarded the Paul Philippe Cret Prize for excellence in design, and the E. Lewis Dales Traveling Fellowship. Additionally, she served as the Teaching Assistant for Design Studios and Professional Practice classes. She continued her passion for teaching as Architecture Design Studio Adjunct Professor at Georgia Institute of Technology and at City University of New York while working full-time.
Sarah sees the value of mentorship, particularly when it comes to the next generation of architects. She has served on design juries at Georgia Institute of Technology, City University of New York, University of Pennsylvania, and Drexel University. She appreciates the uninhibited creativity found in conversations between experienced professionals with the inspired and refreshing minds of students. She enjoys straying from the technicalities of real world architecture to have discussions that question the conceptual.
Sarah has always been active in the design and local community. She recently served as “Host Chapter Lounge Committee Co-Chair” during the AIA Philadelphia 2016 convention. She is thankful and grateful for her talented team members’ efforts for such a successful event during the convention.
Additionally, she volunteered during the first CANstruction event in Philadelphia, and participated in the event the following year. Sarah offers her time at soup kitchens such as The Bethesda Project, Salvation Army and previously with non-profit functions such as New York Cares Day and Hope for New York. An animal advocate, she is a member of the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). It has been two years since Sarah moved back to Philadelphia, and she looks forward becoming even more engaged with the design and educational communities in the city.
She finds relationships very important, and believes a collaborative team environment is the key to success. “Everyone has their own special expertise and knowledge so the bigger the collaboration, the greater and more comprehensive the outcome. I am excited to be given this opportunity to join the board and build relationships to help meet future goals of the local Chapter and serve the evolving AIA community.”
She currently resides in center city Philadelphia with her husband and a puppy named Trudy.
Soha St. Juste, AIA
Design Principal, Jacobs
In her 11 years at KlingStubbins and Jacobs, Soha has completed a diverse range of large, technically complex, and highly-integrated projects across many markets including higher education, science and technology, and corporate and strategic master planning. Her wide range of experience paired with her design skills, community outreach efforts, and involvement in local Philadelphia academia are all reasons why she’s recently been named Design Principal for the Jacobs Philadelphia office and what makes her a top industry professional dedicated to providing outstanding leadership while embodying how multi-disciplinary collaboration leads to high-performance architecture and design. Soha is involved in project pursuits, leads visioning sessions with clients and directs the design process of projects as well as major coordination efforts amongst architecture, interiors, and engineering disciplines throughout the process.
With Soha’s collaboration skills, she’s able to bring together disparate voices and agendas into shared visions and progress making decisions. Serving on the AIA Philadelphia Board of Directors from 2014-2015, she is driven by her desire to strongly represent emerging professionals within the local community. During the first year of her term, she volunteered for the immense task of chairing the Host City Committee for the 2016 AIA National Convention held in Philadelphia. A massive effort requiring intense leadership for two years, she oversaw eight local sub-committees and coordinated with AIA National’s Convention Committee to host the largest Architectural Convention in the country with over 20,000 attendees. Her efforts and involvement with AIA Philadelphia and the National Convention were recognized in 2015 when she was awarded the AIA Pennsylvania Emerging Professional Award, and in 2016 when she was awarded the AIA Philadelphia Chapter Volunteer of the Year Award. For the AIA Convention, Soha coordinated multiple teams that offered 100+ local tours of the best A&E projects in the region, created “pop-up” design exhibits and lounge space at the local AIA Center, ran a parklet design competition across from the Convention Center that featured local firms, and coordinated 850+ local and national volunteers during the 4-day event. She was instrumental in serving as a liaison between the local and national AIA chapters and setting the vision for the local chapter as well as communicating that vision amongst the various sub-committees and volunteers. Throughout her involvement, she was intensely focused on the main vision and objectives she set with the AIA Board of Directors and her Convention Committees:
- Spotlight Philadelphia’s Design Community on a National platform
- Create a reflection and the experience of Philadelphia urban living for a national audience
- Brand the local AIA Center for Architecture as a physical space for convention attendees
- Use the AIA Philadelphia chapter involvement as an opportunity to create local revenue
If re-elected to the AIA Philadelphia Board for the 2017-2018 term, Soha hopes to further engage with AIA Philadelphia leadership around issues such as public advocacy for design, mentorship with emerging professionals, and strengthening partnerships within the larger design community within the Center / Architecture + Design.

Scott J. Compton, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP
Managing Principal, Klein and Hoffman
Scott J. Compton, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP is Managing Principal of Chicago-based Klein and Hoffman's Philadelphia Office, where his responsibilities include general financial oversight, serving as Principal Architect, and representing the firm within the professional community while expanding business development opportunities in the region. Scott holds a 5-Year Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) Degree from Temple University's School of Architecture.
Scott has presented on Facilities Management and Facility Condition Assessment (FCA) topics for Higher Education at DVAPPA, AICUP, and SCUP conferences, and served on a panel addressing Impacts on the Practice of Architecture at the July 2016 AIA States Government Network conference in Washington, DC. In September 2016, Scott helped organize AIA Pennsylvania’s AEC Education Summit in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania where he moderated the panel of architects responsible for the design of the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown Connecticut.
In the professional community, Scott served the Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter AIA as their Secretary and President. Scott now serves on the Executive Board of AIA Pennsylvania and Chairs the Government Affairs Committee and Education Subcommittee. Scott also serves AIA National as a member of its Corporate Architects Facility Managers (CAFM) Advisory Group as well as a member of the AIA Documents Committee, Peer Review Document for the B210 – 2017.
Jeffrey Pastva, AIA, LEED AP
Project Architect, JDAVIS
Jeff is a Project Architect with JDAVIS in Philadelphia, PA. The firm serves numerous housing markets, including market rate multi-family, student, senior and affordable. In addition to the firm’s expertise, he has extensive experience designing affordable and senior multi-family housing. Project typologies include LIHTC work in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland, HUD 202, Non Profit/community development, and historic preservation tax credit.
He is currently serving as the 2015-2016 Communications Director for the National Young Architects Forum Advisory Committee (AdCom) and as the Editor-in-Chief of YAF Connection. Additional AIA service includes local, state, and regional leadership in the forms of Chair/Co-Chair of YAF Philadelphia (2012-2013), Co-Chair of the ARE Study Sessions (2011-2013) and the Young Architect Regional Director for PA (2014). In addition to his service to the AIA, he advises SOSNA as a member of the Architectural Review Committee, was appointed to NCARB’s Future Title Task Force to review intern titling and has conducted profession portfolio seminars for students at Syracuse, NJIT, Drexel and Temple.
“My current and former AIA service has been at the local, regional and national levels. Throughout this experience, I have had many opportunities to hone leadership development skills and build key strategic relationships throughout the country. In my current role, I frequently communicate with young leaders across the nineteen AIA regions, the College of Fellows, and National leadership as we collectively strategize about the future of the profession. As a Board Member, I will apply this knowledge to provide informed and lucid opinions to my fellow board members and to the membership at large in order to advance the goals of the Chapter.”
David Golden, Assoc. AIA
Architectural Designer, Voith & Mactavish Architects
David Golden is an architectural designer at Voith & Mactavish Architects and a graduate of Drexel University. In addition to his involvement with AIA Philadelphia and PEA, David currently serves on the NAAB board of directors. Prior experience includes serving on the AIAS board of directors, and serving as the chair for a regional AIAS conference.
Tya Winn, NOMA, LEED Green Associate, SEED
Program Manager at Philadelphia Housing Authority
Tya Winn is a Program Manager at the Philadelphia Housing Authority working in the Capital Projects and Development Department. In her two years at the Authority she has worked on the pre-development and construction of over $22 Million dollar of new construction. She has focused her career on real estate and community development; prioritizing affordable housing creation, economic development, creative place-making and urban revitalization. Her work in the public sector has included the project management of a comprehensive neighborhood revitalization plan, Make Some Noise Logan! and the master-planning of the Logan Triangle Site in northern Philadelphia. Ms. Winn conceptualized the Logan Parklet, which was part of the City of Philadelphia’s Parklet Pilot Program and was the 2014 PACDC Blue Ribbon Award Winner for outstanding community development projects. She has presented on her work at Design Philadelphia and at national conferences. In her free time, she stays active in the design community. She currently serves as President of the Philadelphia Chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects (PhilaNOMA). She has served as Camp Coordinator for PhilaNOMA’s Project Pipeline, a summer camp designed to expose youth to architecture and sustainability since 2012. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of AIA Philadelphia as Public Member and was co-chair of the 2016 AIA Convention Legacy Project, which is a dedication of the local chapter to increasing STEM offerings related to Architecture and ensuring Philadelphia youth are exposed to design. Tya studied architecture at Syracuse University and received a Masters of Architecture specializing in Urban Design at the University of Pennsylvania. She is focusing her practice on the revitalization of urban communities and how experience of the built environment shapes perceptions of place.
